It has been longed for Tingting, my wife, to pay her visit to the United Kingdom, but it never comes true until this summer, when we determined to arrange the marriage holiday to this lovely country. Within two months, she gets everything prepared, which includes passport, visa and the booking of air tickets. it is very close to the season for the new international students, and the air ticket in these summers never go cheap since the popularity of Asian students coming to UK for their masters.

However, for even the day before her arrival, when she has been on flight, either for sleeping like a swine or enjoying some ‘nice’ flight food, I have not formed a clear idea as where to show her. This is partly because I seldom travel myself, except for a trip to Isle of Man, Edinburgh and also, a three-day trip last year to London. Besides, I visited nowhere else but Manchester only on academic purpose. Her idea about the travelling, on the other hand, is quite straightforward. The only things that can beat her heart, before her coming to UK, is the Thames River and the London Tower bridge. For the fomer, it is well known for most Chinese if they have taken even some chapters of Doyle’s The detective Sherlock Holmes , for the latter, according to my wife’s words, that’s appeared on her English textbook when she was a secondary school student.

Traveling some places without any schedule or plan has formed my own style since my first visit to Hawaii. Some of my colleagues said that I would have to pay for such unconsciousness. That’s true, in fact, as I paid much more on transportation fare than booking in advance, but that provides some flexibilities that match the accidents well. For example, Tingting is still carrying on some timing confusions even after being in Lancaster for five days. The opportunity cost for a delay on trip (which equals to the cost of cancellation the advanced tickets to London, or a reduction on enjoyment of travelling) exceeds the gaps between the prices for an advanced and anytime off-peak ticket from Lancaster to London.

But there is really one thing missing up, which is the British weather. We enjoyed quite a few sunshine this summer but the weather can and does change dramatically just for days before her arrival. There suffered greatly from the showers and wind blowed heavily for the days of her arrival and around. We even have to stay at Lancaster, cooking and watching some movies online in my dorm, partly because of the weather, and partly because of her timing confusing. But what’s really important is that she needs a new pair of shoes that enables her of hiking and travelling around under such a cold weather. So we picked one day up and travelled to Preston.

Preston plays a central role in both governmental and commercial issues of Lancashire, and there you can find much larger shopping malls and halls in relative to Lancaster, where my university is located at. It is this trip that Tingting took her first lesson of living in Britian. That is, we were planning to travel to Preston by National Express, where the bus would pass through the Lancaster University. We waited there for two hours in cold winds but the bus never came. I phoned the customer service for times, but there is no clear reply until they told us the bus had left Lancaster minutes earlier than the schedule (that is in fact 15 minutes in advance).

Eventually we arrived at the Preston, whose shopping mall is located at a nice place, just opposite to the railway station. You can find all the brands, and it is the first time that I get to know where the nearest shopping centre is for my university. The size of the TKMaxx, a discount shop widely spread in UK that focus on sales of off-season products, is twice of large than that of Lancaster. But Tingting seems get the right feeling when entering some Chinese-similar shops. Fortuantely, there does have one, and they offered a 25% off that day. So we get the shoes settled there after paying 50 pounds for that.

We eventually paid a visit to London after several days. There is another reward for our booking late. We successfully find the accommodation located at LSE (London School of Economics ) for only 90 pounds per night. That is unbeatable as the price for the hotels nearly be can never be less than 200 per night considering its being the central area of London, the most prosperous and busy city in Europe. For the first day, however, we failed to catch the Big Bus, but walked to the British Museum as its being very close. This museum is very famous for its collection on antique for ancient Egypt and Greece, where you can see several mommies that are well preserved and maintained. In the Asia section, however, they do provide some very astonishing Indian and Chinese staffs. For Chinese staffs, you can even keep a very close eye to the sculptures made in Tang Dynasty, which is 1,500 years ago. As Tingting said, these kinds of collections is rare to see even in Taipei.

We spent four nights and five days in London, where we enjoyed some very relaxed trips. The big bus for the first day showed us around, for both the narrow streets that goes around the Thames River, and the famous London Tower Bridges. Also, the bus take us to some areas that the properties are only for the richests. Though the London that we see today are partially rebuilt after the London Big Fire and the World War II respectively, Tingting was still greatly shocked by the magnificent building there as what they present, from their design to their apprearnce, refers to nothing else but only luxury. London is really the heaven for the riches and hell for the poors. People here are always leading some fast but efficient life. Young people here in UK often have a dream of working and staying in UK, as they treat this melting pot as the place that they can show and prove themselves, and they can receive very good pay. However, the London-specific high salary can soon be moderated by the high house renting and transportation costs.

The life style is always changed dramatically by the enrollment of a lady, namely, his wife, and this rule works all around the world. As a lazy man that seldom went to the town center for food but only seeking some local changes on campus, I paid quite a few visits to the town with Tingting for food. I even break the no-dining rule and invited some of my friends for dinner. Tingting owns a strong preference on vegetables and fruits, which indeed is very luxury. We went to the town per two days for meat, fresh vegetables and fruits, though here in this country, food belonging to these categories are always not cheap. We cooked everyday and I temporarily said goodbye to the junk food available on campus, and of course, my paper and my office.
…….

The experience in UK, especially of being a resident there in a small town for four years, has brought me much changes on the way of thinking and decision making. For my wife, this change might not be that significant considering her short stay for only three weeks. What she can still remember, is the air condition, the quality of fruits, the taste of croissant, garlic bread, and of course, the strong wind and cold weather there. When asking her about the British food, her comment is still simple and straightforward – I’d cook myself on daily basis,

A Short Visit to Morecambe

It has been quite a long time since my last writing in English. It is quite hard to investigate the reason why, which can be my confidence on writing in English, or just a strong willing to maintain my Chinese writing capability. However, the recent accomplishment of my first formal report to my supervisors after my coming for nearly 12 months brought me some courage of writing this post in English again.

Though I have heard about Morecambe quite soon when coming here, I have not gotten an excellent opportunity of reaching there. In my mind, it is always quite a far place to go, especially when you are looking forward the travelling guide from Lancaster to Morecambe. But, once you have done that like me yesterday under the help of a local bus, you would find, map scaling really matters!

Morecambe is quite a beautiful and quite town by the sea, and unlike Lancaster, the first feeling of mine, is that I am really standing in U.K now! There is quite few foreigners like me, but you can hear about very pure British English everywhere. There is no Indian English, Chinglish and other strange accents any more. What it belongs, or it can present, is its quite and peaceful living style.

This is a photo that is taken near the Queen Victoria Hospital, my first destination for the terrible teeth in my mouth, and where I made the largest deal that day (It costs me 17 pounds for a 20-minute consultation). The sunshine is so warm that it help reduces the cliff feeling from the wind. However, it lasts only thirty minutes.

Not sure whether it is the carrying with a camera that I am regarded as a tourist, an old lady kindly take me to the ‘town centre’, saying that I would be able to take some shopping there. After knowing I am indeed a student from Lancaster, she’s gotten smiled, saying I should enjoy some different life in Morecambe.

High street at Morecambe

It is really hard to say where the difference is between a high street in Lancaster and here in Morecambe since their similarity on quietness. The only difference however, I could find, is the increased probability of coming across people that can speak very good English. If possible, I would like to revisit here in weekend to see how the life goes.

High street at Morecambe

Very firstly impression, I regarded it as a church, but soon I find it is in fact Barclay! Thanks to the Nikon 16-85, I would take such a photo with very close distance but with acceptable distortion.

A happy gent at the beach

Turning out the high street, there is an entrance to the beach nearby. As the old lady said, I really come to Morecambe with a wrong day. The wind blows so heavily that I wonder whether I would be taken into the sea and feed the fishes! This gent is found at the entrance, welcoming people all around the beach. But how long has he been here then?

A lovely piegon

A very interesting staff here you can see, not only in Morecambe, but also in Lancaster and Manchester, that the pigeons never feel frightened when you get close. How can you image if I am telling you that this photo above is taken with a only 16-85 lens? I wonder in most places in China, you would not have any opportunity for such a shot with a lens less than 200 mm and a reliable tripod. Here is another pigeon who is staring at me.

Another pegion

Walking along the beach is romantic, which most people would agree. However, such conclusion is only valid in a fine weather. In such a windy weather, it is really a terrible experience. However, you got good opportunities for a shot since nearly no one there!

A path to the heaven

A very good condition of taking a photo in such a weather is quite unique and interesting. Thanks to my new cheap Nikon which offers better resolution than my previous Powershot, the image is quite clear in fact. And the cloudy weather prevent the image from the disturbing of too much sunshine and the reflection from the water. The only problem is, however, the sea is becoming yellow but not blue anymore~

Shore

There is a large viewing platform near a harbour that you can walk into the very distant place to enjoy the wind. It is quite safe with fence protection and the height between the sea surface and that platform should be safe enough when a high tide happens.

Viewing platform

Walking through the platform, I suddenly find some guys fishing there. I really don’t know if such a bad weather would be good for fishing. And sitting there in a chair is really not interesting. It is too cool~

Fishing in the wind

Following is a photo from the place they are fishing. It is the end to the platform, where you got the feeling of being involved in the sea. Unlike the beach at Honolulu where you smell the commercials, here what you get is only the truth of life.

The sea

Comparing to that, I am more interested in the sight at the beach. Since it is only the place that you can enjoy both the nature and our living space. It is just like standing at the border, a border that distinguishes the human being and nature.

The quiietness

The beach

To the end

If conditioned and having my own car and driving license in hand, I would not reject of living in Morecambe. Comparing to Lancaster, Morecambe is really a better place for living. If saying there is small difference between the largest cities in China and UK, the development of urban areas like Morecambe should be the largest difference between UK, an old developed country, and China, which is still regarded as a big fool and ‘new money’ to the West.

Education in UK: Some Random Talks

Four-Week Invigilation: An Informal Review

Lancaster of Winter: A First Impression

Towards PhD in UK: Applying for LUMS

Lancaster?

Lancaster?

Follow the instruction, and take it step by step.

      Dear Jun

Thank you for your interest in applying to the PhD programme in the Department of Accounting and Finance at Lancaster University Management School. I very much look forward to reading your application. Unfortunately, we are unable to read or comment on any research proposals prior to formal consideration of your application. You will receive information concerning the status of your application from our admissions office in due course.

      Regards

      Steve

      1. Lancaster University Management School Research Studentships

A number of Management School Research Studentships will be available up to the value of £15,000 – this includes a fee waiver and maintenance award. To be considered for this award, PhD applicants should indicate that they wish to request a Research Studentship when completing the ‘source of funding’ question as part of their postgraduate study application. We regret that the closing date for receipt of applications for this year has now passed (31 March 2010).

      Dear Jun,

I hope this email finds you well.

We are pleased to confirm our offer for you to receive a three-year PhD Departmental scholarship.  The scholarship will deliver an annual maintenance allowance of around GBP 13,290 (2009/10 rate, subject to small increase per year to be determined for 2010/11) plus payment of tuition fees.  In return for this, we require students to deliver teaching and/or research assistance to the department – training is available for teaching duties as well as peer and mentor support.  We also supply a small research budget for conference/seminar-related costs.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to get in touch.

      Best wishes,

      Joanna

    1. Offer

    2. Funding
